Cameron’s Story

I have a confession to make… sometimes I wonder if what I’m doing matters. I mean, there are so many high quality videos and DVDs already out there on the market, why should I bother making my little videos at my kitchen table?

Well, last week I got an email that brought tears to my eyes. Rather than summarize it, I’m sharing the whole thing with you (with permission of course)…

Hi Lane,

I have been a follower of yours for quite a while now. Your site is amazing and the wealth of knowledge you provide is priceless.

I’d like you to know our story.

Cameron, is a 2 year old precious angel! He is my grandson that I am raising along with his 8 year old brother. Cameron has the 2nd rarest brain condition on the planet, Schizencephaly. You can find out more here: What this means for him is, about 25% of his brain is missing due to fetal stroke enutero. He also has Polymicrogyria and Cerebral Palsy. He has developmental delays, along with motor delays. He is still non verbal as of right now.

Cameron has been in therapy since he was 4 months old. I have been taught signs throughout this period, and tried my hardest to teach him. I found your site when Cam was about 1 year old and started learning more signs. He mastered more, and would do it with no prompting at all. He would do a few other signs that we’ve picked up here and there. Well, I began talking to him in both sign and verbally. He may not use all the signs yet, but at least I’m exposing him to them.

Last night, my heart just about burst. I get your mailings and I always use the signs you include. I love sign language, it is a beautiful language that I think everyone of us should know! So I get so happy when I see an email from you with new signs to learn and start using and teaching my sweet little man. Well last night, he grabbed one of his favorite books “I love my puppy” and he brought it to me, opened it up on my lap, turned to the first page, and there were pictures of a dog, cat, and ball. With no prompting from me at all…..Cameron “read” to me!!! He pointed at the cat, and did the sign for cat, tehn dog, then ball, turned the page and continued reading, cat again, ball, duck, dog….this continued for the entire book!

You have no idea what this meant to me. I’ve wondered how much is he paying attention, how much is he learning, am I doing this right? Last night was my confirmation, that yes! He will be able to communicate, he is learning the signs!!!!!

Thank you for helping others the way you do, God puts people in our lives for a reason, and He put you in ours so we could be successful at communicating and have fun learning.

I asked Cameron’s grandmother, Shelly, if there are any signs she’d like to learn to teach to Cameron and she said he’s really interested in cars, trucks, trains & planes. In honor of Cameron, I created a brand new free mini lesson on transportation signs. You can check it out here.

Much love,

PS Thank you, Shelly, for making me feel so special and cheers to you for the amazing job you’re doing raising your grandson. I’m so grateful you took the time to share Cam’s story with me – and for letting me share it here too!
